Dear family

Attending a church service does not equate to being part of a church family. According to the New Testament, the essence of church life involves engaging in open, vulnerable, and interactive relationships with one another.

Had God intended for Sunday services to take precedence, He would have explicitly commanded such practices in the Bible; however, this is not the case. Numerous passages instead outline what the church should represent and what its members require.

The New Testament emphasizes the necessity of practicing “one another.” Starting with  “Love one another” (John 13:34), it goes on and on describing how congregations function.

The term “one another” signifies interactions among all members rather than just between a pastor and the congregation. The structured environment of worship services hinders these interactions. To genuinely minister to one another as the New Testament suggests, we must exist in a familial atmosphere that fosters interaction.

I support weekly worship services; however, I question the elevated importance placed on Sunday morning services, which often detracts from fulfilling the New Testament’s directives for practicing “one another,” the true embodiment of church.

Living the ‘one another’ is disciple making in its simplest and most powerful form.

An intriguing trend has emerged: while many churches promote the formation of small groups, participation in these groups is often viewed as optional. These groups function as small spiritual families where the New Testament principles of “one another” are actively practiced, representing the true essence of the church. In contrast, attendance at Sunday morning worship services is frequently perceived as a biblical obligation.

In reality, the New Testament clearly mandates participation in the spiritual family, or small groups. The larger gatherings, by comparison, are more accurately deemed optional. This perspective starkly contrasts current practices.
